The employer's-land language matters for farm employees. It also covers government employees whose jobs involve restricted use pesticides. The common thread is that the work is done on someone else's behalf or for a purpose other than producing your own agricultural commodity, and so the competency bar is organized and examined differently.

Commercial certification is organized by category. Instead of one general credential, a commercial applicator is certified in the specific kinds of work they perform, and each category has its own competency standards. The federal standards define a core set of categories, and states may add categories of their own on top. Farm-family scenarios

For-hire and everyone-else scenarios

If restricted use pesticides are part of the service you sell, the commercial credential is part of the cost of being in that business, and category selection follows directly from the services on your list.

Less obvious are the salaried and public roles. A groundskeeper at a school district, a technician at a grain facility, a utility vegetation crew member, a public health employee managing mosquito populations: none of them bills a customer, yet all of them sit inside the commercial definition when restricted use products are involved, because none of that work is producing an agricultural commodity on their own or their employer's land. The category system exists precisely so that each of these roles is examined on material relevant to it.

There are also applicators who legitimately need both credentials. Agricultural pest control: plant and animal

The agricultural category is really two related certifications. The plant side covers pest control on crops: row crops, vegetables, fruit, forage, grain, and the noncrop agricultural land that surrounds production, such as fence lines and fallow ground. If you are a custom applicator treating other people's fields for hire, this is your home category. The subject matter leans heavily on weed, insect, and plant disease identification, application timing relative to crop growth stages, and the practical realities of covering large acreages without moving product where it does not belong.

The animal side covers pesticides applied to livestock and to the places livestock live. Think external parasite control on cattle, treatments in and around barns and confinement facilities, and premise treatments for flies and other pests of animal agriculture. The competency emphasis shifts toward animal safety, the connection between treatments and food production, and reading labels for uses on or around animals. Some businesses need both halves of the agricultural category, and many states let you test for them separately so you only carry what you use.

Forest pest control
