Commercial applicator
A certified applicator who uses or supervises restricted use pesticides for purposes outside the private applicator definition, typically for hire.
A commercial applicator is a person certified to use or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides for any purpose that falls outside the private applicator definition. The most visible commercial applicators work for hire, applying pesticides on other people's property as a service, but the classification also reaches many people applying restricted products in the course of employment, from grounds crews to government program staff. If restricted use work is not producing an agricultural commodity on your own or your employer's land, it is commercial.
Commercial certification is organized into categories that correspond to different kinds of work, such as agricultural, ornamental and turf, right-of-way, structural, aquatic, fumigation, and aerial application. An applicator certifies in each category covering work they perform, which keeps study and testing focused on relevant competencies. Under the federal standard, commercial applicators must be at least eighteen years old and demonstrate competency through written examination, and certifying authorities may add performance-based testing for particular categories.
For a business, commercial certification functions as both legal access and market position. Restricted use services can only be sold by firms with properly certified applicators, and supervision rules determine how far each certification stretches across a crew. Commercial credentials expire on the schedule the certifying authority sets, within the federal framework, and are maintained through recertification by either passing the examination again or completing approved continuing education.
