Pesticide label

The pesticide label is the document attached to and accompanying a pesticide product, and it is a legal instrument rather than packaging copy. Labels are reviewed and approved as part of a product's registration, and using a pesticide in a manner inconsistent with its labeling violates federal law. This is the source of the phrase every applicator learns early: the label is the law. Whatever question arises about a product, the label is the first and controlling place to look.

A label communicates the product's classification, hazard signal word, precautionary statements, personal protective equipment requirements, environmental hazard statements, directions for use including permitted sites and pests, and storage and disposal instructions. For restricted use products, the label also carries the classification statement that limits sale and use to certified applicators and those they supervise. Each section imposes real obligations, and an applicator is accountable for all of them.

Because the label governs every application, label comprehension is the core skill that applicator certification verifies. Exams return to the label constantly, asking candidates to extract requirements, permissions, and prohibitions from label language. In the field, the same skill determines whether work is lawful and safe. Reading labels accurately, completely, and before acting is the defining habit of a competent applicator.
